There’s a good chance an old phone is sitting in a drawer somewhere right now, screen cracked or battery dying a slow death, doing absolutely nothing except taking up space. It happens to almost everyone. A new phone arrives, the old one gets shoved aside “just in case,” and then it sits there for years, quietly losing value with every passing month.

The truth is, that old phone is worth more today than it will be in six months. Tech depreciates fast, so the longer it sits untouched, the more money gets left on the table. Here’s how to actually do something about it.

    Why Bother Selling At All?

Beyond the obvious cash incentive, there’s a practical case for clearing out old devices. Storage drawers fill up fast, old batteries can swell or degrade over time (which isn’t great to have lying around), and most old phones still hold personal data that’s better off wiped and gone rather than forgotten about indefinitely.

There’s also an environmental angle worth mentioning. Refurbished phones extend the life of the device and reduce e-waste, so selling on genuinely does more good than letting it sit untouched.

    Prep Before Listing Anything

A little prep work goes a long way toward getting a fair price and avoiding hassle later.

Back up first. Photos, contacts, messages or anything worth keeping should be backed up to a cloud service or transferred to the new device before wiping anything.

Sign out properly. This means removing the device from iCloud, Google accounts, or any “Find My” tracking features. A phone still linked to someone’s account is effectively unsellable, since most buyers (and resale platforms) will reject it outright.

Factory reset. This clears personal data and returns the phone to a clean, sellable state. Skipping this step is one of the most common reasons private sales fall through.

Check the basics. Battery health, screen condition, and whether the phone is unlocked or tied to a specific network all directly affect what it’s worth. An unlocked phone in solid condition can fetch noticeably more than the same model locked to one carrier.

    Where to Actually Sell It

There are a few routes, and they each suit different priorities.

    • Resale marketplaces (eBay, Swappa, Facebook Marketplace) tend to get the best price, but require more effort — photos, listings, and dealing directly with buyers.
    • Trade-in and buyback schemes are the quickest option. Hand over the device, get a quote, done. The trade-off is usually a lower payout in exchange for convenience.
    • Comparison sites let multiple buyback companies bid for the same device, which can help avoid settling for the first offer that comes along.

Anyone searching “sell my phone” online will find no shortage of options, but it’s worth comparing at least two or three before committing. Prices for the same model can vary more than people expect between platforms, sometimes by £30-£50 or more.

    Old Tablets Count Too

Phones aren’t the only devices worth resurrecting from a drawer. Tablets follow the same depreciation pattern and are just as easy to sell on, provided they’re backed up and wiped properly first.

For anyone with an old iPad sitting unused, a trade in ipad scheme is often the simplest route, particularly for older models where private resale demand has dropped off. It won’t always match what a determined private sale could achieve, but it turns an idle device into usable cash with minimal effort, it’s a fair trade for most people who’d rather not deal with listings and back-and-forth messages.

    Red Flags Worth Knowing

A few things are worth watching out for, regardless of which route gets chosen:

    • Offers that seem too generous. These are often “adjusted” downward after the device is sent in, citing minor issues that weren’t mentioned upfront.
    • Buyers asking for gift card payment. This is almost always a scam.
    • Skipping reviews. A quick search of a buyback company’s name plus “reviews” takes seconds and can save a lot of frustration.

Taking payment through a protected platform, rather than informal bank transfers with strangers, adds a useful layer of security to any private sale.

    The Bottom Line

An old phone gathering dust isn’t doing anyone any favours; not the wallet, not the environment, and not the drawer it’s cluttering up. A bit of prep, a fair comparison of where to sell, and a healthy scepticism toward offers that sound too good all add up to a smoother, more profitable clear-out. What’s sitting idle today is worth considerably less a year from now, so there’s little reason to keep putting it off.
