Football has always had a complicated relationship with eyewear. On the pitch, glasses are almost never part of the picture. Off it, that has changed completely. Walk through any stadium tunnel on a matchday and the sunglasses on display would not look out of place at a fashion week front row. The shift has been quick, and the players driving it have made certain brands impossible to ignore.

Here are the three sunglasses that have become the most recognisable choices among footballers right now, and why they have landed the way they have.

    • Why Footballers and Sunglasses Make Sense Now

    1. Ray-Ban Sunglasses

Ray-Ban remains the most consistently spotted brand across footballers of different generations, styles, and clubs. The appeal is straightforward. The design catalogue is wide enough to suit both players who prefer something understated and those who want a frame with more presence, and the brand carries enough cultural weight to work as a style statement without requiring any explanation.

The Wayfarer and the Clubmaster are the two shapes that appear most frequently in tunnel fits and post-match appearances. Both sit comfortably between casual and considered, which suits the hybrid context footballers increasingly occupy, simultaneously professional athletes and public style figures.

Ray-Ban sunglasses also translate well to prescription formats, which matters for players who need vision correction off the pitch. The combination of a frame with genuine heritage and solid lens quality across its range explains why the brand has stayed relevant across different eras of football culture rather than peaking and fading with a particular generation.

    2. Oakley Sunglasses

Oakley’s resurgence in football culture has been driven almost entirely by Jules Koundé of Barcelona. His publicly stated preference for the Oakley Romeo X Metal, declared in an interview with GQ France, is the kind of endorsement that repositions a brand in a new market without a formal campaign behind it. The Romeo X Metal had already built its cultural credentials through its association with Michael Jordan and the 1998 Chicago Bulls, and Koundé’s adoption of it brought those references directly into the football world.

Oakley sunglasses have a design identity that sits distinctly apart from fashion eyewear. The technical, almost industrial aesthetic of the brand’s archive pieces reads differently on a footballer than the standard luxury or streetwear-adjacent choices. That contrast is part of what makes it interesting. Koundé wearing a Romeo X Metal alongside a designer outfit creates a tension that a more conventional luxury brand choice would not.

The broader Oakley catalogue has heritage in performance eyewear, and the brand’s association with Edgar Davids across his career at Juventus, Barcelona, and the Dutch national team is still referenced when the brand comes up in football contexts. That history gives the brand a dual identity in the sport, both functional and fashion-forward, that few competitors can claim.

    3. Aviator Sunglasses

Aviator sunglasses are not a brand but a shape, and in football that shape has become one of the most recognisable off-pitch choices across multiple clubs and nationalities. The teardrop lens, thin metal frame, and distinctly unfussy silhouette suit the kind of post-match, airport, and press appearance context that modern footballers navigate constantly.

What makes aviators particularly well-suited to footballers is the versatility of the shape across different face types and styling contexts. They work with casual wear and formal outfits equally without requiring the look to be built around them. For players who are photographed in dozens of different contexts across a season, that adaptability matters practically.

Several luxury brands produce aviator styles that have appeared regularly across the tunnel fit circuit, and the shape has enough cross-cultural recognition that it lands as a considered choice rather than a safe one. Éder Militão’s appearance at GQ Spain’s Man of the Year event wearing sunglasses paired with a Fendi suit sits in this category, where the eyewear is not the loudest element of the outfit but is clearly deliberate.

Why Footballers and Sunglasses Make Sense Now

The connection between football and eyewear has deepened as players have become more deliberate about off-pitch style. The tunnel fit, the pre-match outfit, the airport look, these have become as scrutinised as anything that happens on the pitch for certain players, and sunglasses are one of the few accessories that work within the athletic context without looking out of place.

The players who have driven this shift are not doing it as brand strategy, at least not primarily. Koundé’s Oakley preference came up in a broader conversation about his personal style. Camavinga’s Nike sunglasses moment became news because of the adidas sponsorship conflict it triggered, not because it was planned. That authenticity is part of what has made the trend stick rather than read as manufactured.

For anyone interested in eyewear specifically, the effect has been a renewed conversation about what sunglasses are for and what they say. Ray-Ban sunglasses, Oakley sunglasses, and aviator styles sit at the centre of that conversation in football right now for reasons that are as much about the individual players wearing them as the products themselves.
